These two countries were alike in the colonization of there territory because they were both introduced to the land through trading companies and those companies were both eventually taken by the government who took over the responsibilities of the companies. Both nations also allowed some local autonomy to the native peoples as both the British Raj and Dutch Indonesia, princely states existed.
They were different because the British separated themselves from the natives and considered themselves superior. The British did not deal with the natives on a daily basis. In contrast, the Dutch considered the natives of Indonesia to be just as "Dutch" as they themselves. they educated them and gave them more opportunities. Which lead to initial cooperation but in the end cost the Dutch. Both the British and Dutch improved the economic states for the native people, but judging by the current economic states of India and Indonesia, the British seemed to have done a better job at improvements.
